Richard Wilson portrays Gaius: Camelot's court physician, Merlin's guardian and one of the few who know Merlin's secret. Gaius is a sorcerer himself but the King has banned him from using magic, and is something of an alchemist and magical scholar. He has a dry sense of humour and sees Merlin as the son he never had. Despite recent controversy about Gaius and Merlin's relationship, he is in fact not Merlin's uncle, merely a trusted friend of his mother.
